Field Report

The fall has seen a flurry of activity in the tap field here in the islands. In September Diamond Head Theatre on O’ahu presented the Gershwin musical Crazy for You. The excellent choreography and dancing of Caryn Yee, plus her outstanding cast of tap dancing chorus members, helped make the show the huge success it was. In October the long awaited return of tap classes at Ballet Hawai’i (absent since the death of our beloved teacher, Jim Hutchison, two years ago) occurred, thanks to the fact that Hawai’i-born Pauline Hagino returned home to O’ahu following a long and successful career dancing and teaching in southern California where she was a member of Rhapsody in Taps and a dance faculty member at Orange Coast College. Finally, in November the Maui Tap Experience presented another outstanding four-day festival of tap at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (see review below). Interest in tap continues to grow with classes now being offered on several islands. The University of Hawai’i, Manoa, kicks in again in the spring with a tap class to be taught by Peggy Gaither-Adams, a member of the university’s Theatre and Dance Department.
